For the next two months, Big 12 football teams will almost exclusively beat up each other. Critics will say that option beats the alternative we saw in nonconference play. The Big 12, which began the season as the most likely alternative to the Southeastern Conference as the nation's best conference, had just one team (No. 2 Texas) higher than 15th in the most recent Associated Press poll.

Texas safety Christian Scott and wide receiver Brandon Collins will miss the entire 2009 season due to NCAA academic issues, UT announced Tuesday. Both players had been sidelined since opening week while they awaited word from the NCAA as to whether they'd made sufficient academic progress toward a degree. Scott, a third-year sophomore, was one of the stars of preseason camp and had been expected to play a huge role in the UT secondary this season.

We’re disappointed for Brandon and Christian that they won’t be able to play this season but they will continue to practice with the team and work towards earning their degrees, which is the ultimate goal   -Mack Brown

Texas junior wide receiver Brandon Collins and sophomore defensive back Christian Scott will miss the rest of the 2009 football season as a result of unresolved NCAA academic eligibility issues. Both players are enrolled in classes and remain in good academic standing at Texas. They will be permitted to continue practicing with the team, but won't be eligible to play in a game.
